Off the Beaten Path

When I lived in Jackson I had the chance to meet Marlo Kirkpatrick. She is a Mississippi Storyteller that wrote Mississippi Off the Beaten Path. Chad and I have read through it several times and finally planned a trip to do some of the things she wrote about.

Last Thursday Chad and I headed to Clarksdale, MS to stay 2 nights at the Shack up Inn. Below are a few pictures of the inside of our shack - Pinetop (Named for Pinetop Perkins):

Thursday Night we had dinner @ Madidi then went to Ground Zero to hear some Blues...

On Saturday we drove to Merigold for lunch at The Gallery Cafe and Shopping at McCarty.

They recommend reservations @ The Gallery. I am really glad we made them because it was a packed house. They have a hot plate and cold plate special each day that comes with a cup of soup. The lunch was delicious but a little fru fru for Chad.

Entrance to McCarty Pottery

After lunch Chad and I drove a few blocks from the McCarty Gallery Cafe to McCarty Pottery. I was so excited and overwhelmed by all the beautiful pieces. Of course I wanted everything but I ended up purchasing the rest of our dinner plates and bowls. Maybe I can get a fun new piece next time. After we put our purchases in the car we toured the beautiful gardens that surround the McCarty Compound. We would have never know what a treasure they were if my Uncle Dave hadn't told us. I highly recommend it. It will give you some great ideas for your own yard.
After McCarty we stopped by Peter's and purchase 2 coffee mugs and headed back to Clarksdale to tour the Blues Museum.

The Blues Museum was very interesting. I enjoyed reading about all the great Blues musicians and seeing memorabilia from the past. Afterwards we asked this guy to take our picture in front of the sign out front. And this guy jumped in the picture with us. Any guesses who it is?

Clarksdale Mayor, Allie and Chad.
Yep that's right. He thought we wanted our picture with him. I guess he is a local celebrity.

Friday Night we stayed at the Shack and Grilled Chicken.

On Saturday we checked out of The Shack up Inn and headed to Greenwood.
In Greenwood we had lunch at The Crystal Grill and checked into the Alluvian. Wow what a change. At The Alluvian you don't feel like you are in Mississippi much less the Delta. Saturday afternoon we treated ourselves to the Spa. I highly recommend one of the couples packages. After a relaxing afternoon at the spa we got ready for dinner and headed to Lusco's. Lusco's is a brown bag Steak and Seafood Restaurant that is a Greenwood Tradition. They still have the booth's from Prohibition. Below are some pictures...

After dinner we headed back to The Alluvian for a Night Cap and dessert at Gardina's. On Sunday we had breakfast, checked out and headed to Tupelo. I was sad to see our trip end but it was so nice to get back early and have time to do things before the sun went down.

Wow - this looks like so much fun! This would be fun to do as a girls' trip, too. Maybe before Christmas so I can get gifts for family at McCarty? We should keep it in mind. It would be a good spot to meet up.
